Shane Watson treats flood victims to a game of cricket.

“We are in a very lucky position to try and make some difference. It’s great that we can show our support because it’s been devastating for families out here.”

Watson dominated the Australian innings, leaving England reeling in field with their bowling plans in shreds. It was a superb knock one of the best one day innings I’ve seen and deservedly took the victory, something of a personal triumph for Watson who throughout the Test series looked all set for match winning innings and never quite managed it.

The match itself was a great advert for one day cricket and we can now look forward to a very close series, who said one day cricket was boring?

This photo just about sums up Shane Watson’s day, destructive with both bat and ball he could easily have swung the game in Australia’s favour, without him Australia would have been a shambles. However Watson was powerless to resist his own frailties with the bat and the England’s seemingly never ending Twenty20 bandwagon.

Alas if only Watson could bat past 60 Australia might well have walked it…

The Art of the Leave

It’s almost as if Australia picked an entirely different opening pair for this test; Philip ‘leave it on length’ Hughes and Shane ‘knows his off stump’ Watson have been leaving it like Geoff Boycott and Michael Atherton on a sponsored leave-athon as if leaving the ball was worth sixth runs. In this case that is probably not far from the truth; with only four bowlers in England’s attack and the Kookaburra losing it’s shine and swing Australia’s batsman can cash in later on. Philip Hughes in particular has battled against his instincts trying not to hit out, but just as the morning session came to an end Hughes stabbed at one he should have left, his patience in the morning session will not be repaid because his mind was already in the dressing room.

As a cricket fan I’m disappointed Hughes has a huge amount of talent and now needs to learn the art of building an innings, this is probably the best cricket we’ve had all series with bowlers bowling threaten deliveries but the batsman with patience and solid technique backing it up. As an England fan I’m delighted to see the persistence of Tremlett and Anderson rewarded, England needed some reward for that session.

Now the new boy, Khawaja has to face the music. Is he up to the challenge?
