The Art of the Leave

It’s almost as if Australia picked an entirely different opening pair for this test; Philip ‘leave it on length’ Hughes and Shane ‘knows his off stump’ Watson have been leaving it like Geoff Boycott and Michael Atherton on a sponsored leave-athon as if leaving the ball was worth sixth runs. In this case that is probably not far from the truth; with only four bowlers in England’s attack and the Kookaburra losing it’s shine and swing Australia’s batsman can cash in later on. Philip Hughes in particular has battled against his instincts trying not to hit out, but just as the morning session came to an end Hughes stabbed at one he should have left, his patience in the morning session will not be repaid because his mind was already in the dressing room.

As a cricket fan I’m disappointed Hughes has a huge amount of talent and now needs to learn the art of building an innings, this is probably the best cricket we’ve had all series with bowlers bowling threaten deliveries but the batsman with patience and solid technique backing it up. As an England fan I’m delighted to see the persistence of Tremlett and Anderson rewarded, England needed some reward for that session.

Now the new boy, Khawaja has to face the music. Is he up to the challenge?
